Canberra-based Vanishing Sound release their second single, “Over the Edge”, on 14 November through spitting.img records, available on all major streaming platforms. The track continues the band’s blend of shimmering dream pop and shoegaze DIY textures.

The song is a synthesis of late 90s ambient electronic pop and 80s twee dream pop—William Orbit atmospherics meeting Cocteau Twins’ otherworldly textures. Singer Steph Cox delivers a siren call, drawing the listener into swelling synth beds, jangly guitars, and a big, soaring chorus. Simultaneously bittersweet and cathartic, with “Over the Edge” Vanishing Sound have delivered a rising, serene anthem. The single was self-produced by the band with synth player Lachlan Thomas stepping forward as producer, and mastered by David Forcier.

“Over the Edge” interrogates the strange intimacies and dependencies people have started to form with AI. The song explores how attention-hungry platforms and AI-driven systems can begin as companions and evolve into something darker and more consuming. As technology changes and intimacy is rapidly redefined, the song asks what is gained and what is lost when we surrender pieces of ourselves to algorithms. Are we on the threshold of transcendence, or on the edge of an abyss?

The single is the second milestone in the band’s careful process of crafting their first LP, following “From Today” released in early 2025. Vanishing Sound have spent recent years supporting Australian and international acts passing through Canberra, building a reputation for distinctive songwriting that feels singular within Australia’s current music scene while remaining accessible to any fan of concise, melodic indie-pop.

Emerging from the basements and underground venues of the Australian Capital Territory, Vanishing Sound is a group of Canberra DIY fixtures with members from TV Colours, Earache, Assassins 88, Danger Beach, Dog Name, Territory, Slug, and New Age Group. Their music fuses glittering dream pop and shoegaze fuzz with the pop sensibilities of early Flying Nun-era heroes, producing textural, detuned guitars, gliding synths, hook-forward melodies, and harmonies. Vanishing Sound have supported Carsick Cars, Gee Tee, Jebediah, and Hachiku.

Vanishing Sound can be seen next supporting Japanese rockers DYGL and GRMLN on 22 January.
